Anita Nandris-Cudla, Twenty years in Siberia
Now this is going to be a difficult book to find. I’ve actually read it in its original version, after getting the paperback as a gift from a friend in Romania. You will not find it translated into many other languages, nor will you find any other books by the author. That is, because she is not a professional writer. She’s a peasant Romanian woman who’s barely had any formal schooling, and this is her wonderful autobiography covering the two decades she and her children spent in a Siberian labor camp. A most exquisite read that’s made me laugh and cry and think about things I’ve never touched upon before. My only 5 star book of 2012, or so my Goodreads account says.
