Almost immediately after I’ve started reading Jamrach’s Menagerie, a close friend told me he’d recently read it and found it a bit boring, so I think I was somewhat prepared not to like it. A couple of pages into it though, and I was enraptured. I’ve so very much enjoyed the first part, with its description of life in London’s 19th century slums, that I’ve gone through a third of the book in a couple of hours. The plot has now moved away from London and onto a whaling ship, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see if I still like it as it unravels. I think this will be my last book of 2012, so I’d really love for it to be great!
In the photo: my Amazon Kindle at the current Jamrach’s Menagerie location, 39% read. Also a set of Alphonse Mucha cards I’m sending from Prague, where I’ve started and so far read this book.
